Cycling looks simple until you've been sitting on a bike for two or three hours. Then every small issue with your position becomes obvious.
A saddle that's slightly off, handlebars that are too far away, or excessive tension through your shoulders can turn an otherwise enjoyable ride into a battle with your own body.
I've spent more than 25 years working with athletes, and one thing I see repeatedly is athletes trying to solve performance problems by pushing harder when the real issue is efficiency. If you're constantly shifting on the saddle, gripping the handlebars too tightly, or fighting to stay in an aerodynamic position, you're using energy simply to maintain your position.
Good cycling posture isn't about looking perfect. It's about creating a relationship between your body and the bike that lets you produce power, breathe properly, and stay comfortable as fatigue sets in.
Comfort also matters when you're training across three disciplines, which is why a well-designed SLS3 triathlon suit can make a difference during long training sessions and races.
No single position works for every cyclist. Your height, flexibility, proportions, bike geometry, riding discipline, and experience all influence your ideal setup.
A road cyclist climbing a mountain isn't going to look the same as a triathlete holding an aerodynamic position on a flat course. That's perfectly normal.
Your head and neck should remain relatively neutral.
Your shoulders should stay relaxed rather than creeping toward your ears.
Your elbows should have a slight bend rather than being locked.
Your hands should maintain a light, controlled grip.
Your hips should remain relatively stable on the saddle.
Your knees should track naturally as you pedal.
Your back should feel stable without excessive tension.
Your position should allow you to breathe comfortably.
The key word is “sustainable”. A position that looks fantastic for five minutes but falls apart after an hour isn't a good position.
One of the most common mistakes in proper bike position is lifting the head too aggressively.
You obviously need to look ahead, especially when riding outdoors, but that doesn't mean you need to hold your head high and keep your neck tense for the entire ride.
Try to keep the back of your neck long and relaxed, allowing your eyes to do more of the work. This becomes especially important on long rides because even minor tension can build into significant discomfort after several hours.
Am I constantly looking too far ahead?
Are my shoulders creeping upward?
Am I reaching too far for the bars?
Am I holding tension through my upper body?
The answer may have more to do with your position than your fitness.
Your shoulders shouldn't be sitting around your ears, and you shouldn't need to crush the handlebars with your hands.
As cycling intensity increases, particularly on climbs or during hard intervals, it's natural to create tension. The problem comes when that tension spreads throughout your upper body and stays there.
During your next ride, periodically check: Shoulders down. Elbows soft. Hands relaxed.
That doesn't mean becoming passive or losing control. You still need to steer, brake, and react quickly. You're simply removing muscular tension that isn't helping you move the bike forward.
This is especially important for triathletes because unnecessary upper-body tension can make holding an aerodynamic position much, much harder.

Locked elbows create a rigid connection between your hands, arms, and shoulders.
A slight bend gives your arms freedom to absorb road movement while keeping your upper body more relaxed.
Think about your arms as part of the bike's suspension system. They don't need to absorb every bump, but letting them move naturally can make rougher roads much more comfortable.
Keep your elbows slightly bent.
Maintain control of the handlebars.
Absorb small changes in the road.
Keep your shoulders relaxed.
Avoid unnecessary tension through your wrists.
Your hips are effectively the foundation of your cycling position.
When you're pedaling efficiently, your pelvis should remain relatively stable on the saddle. Excessive side-to-side movement can indicate that your position, mobility, strength, or pedaling mechanics need attention.
This doesn't mean you should try to freeze your body. Cycling is dynamic, and some movement is completely normal.
The issue is excessive movement that appears because you're struggling to maintain your position.
If your hips begin rocking significantly when you're tired, that's also useful information. It may tell you that your current position or workload is no longer sustainable.
This is particularly relevant to triathletes. A lower torso can reduce aerodynamic drag, but lower isn't automatically faster.
Can't breathe comfortably
Lose power
Develop back or neck pain
Can't maintain the position
Become unstable through your hips
Have to repeatedly sit upright
Then the aerodynamic advantage may be outweighed by the performance cost. The fastest aero cycling position is often the most aerodynamic position you can actually maintain.
That's an important distinction. You aren't trying to find the most aggressive position. You're trying to find the fastest sustainable position. If you have spent far too long in an aggressive position, you might want to check out high-quality recovery products.
Even excellent technique can't completely compensate for a poor bike fit.
Saddle height, saddle setback, reach, and handlebar position all influence your cycling ergonomics. A position that's too cramped can restrict movement and breathing, while excessive reach can place unnecessary stress on your neck, shoulders, and lower back.

This isn't a diagnostic table; pain can have many causes. But persistent discomfort is a good reason to stop simply accepting it as "part of cycling."
For cyclists riding significant weekly volume, a professional bike fit can be one of the better investments you make.
This is one of the most important things to understand about proper cycling posture.
It's easy to look technically sound when you're fresh. The real test comes after two hours, during the final kilometers of a long ride or halfway through a hard interval session.
Fatigue often reveals weaknesses that aren't obvious when you're fresh.
Shoulders rising toward your ears.
Elbows becoming locked.
Hips beginning to rock.
Head dropping or moving excessively.
Grip becoming tighter.
Breathing becoming restricted.
Frequent changes in position simply to get comfortable.
Rather than automatically pushing harder, use these changes as feedback. Sometimes the smartest response to deteriorating posture is simply to back off.

Triathletes have another problem that cyclists don't: you have to run afterward. That changes how you should think about your position.
A cycling position that allows you to produce excellent power but leaves your hips, lower back and legs destroyed may not be the best triathlon position. Your goal isn't simply to maximize your bike performance in isolation.
You need to ride efficiently enough to still run.

This is why I encourage triathletes to think about the “whole race”, rather than obsessing over one number on the bike computer.
The fastest bike split isn't particularly useful if it produces your worst run.

You don't need to spend your next ride obsessing over every part of your body. In fact, that can create even more tension.
Instead, pick one or two things to monitor during each ride.
Are my shoulders relaxed?
Am I gripping the bars too tightly?
Are my elbows slightly bent?
Is my breathing comfortable?
Are my hips stable?
Can I maintain this position without forcing it?
If the answer to several of those questions is consistently "no", it's worth investigating your bike setup rather than simply trying harder.
There's a temptation to think that good posture means holding exactly the same position for an entire ride.
It doesn't.
Good cyclists move. You should change hand positions, stand occasionally, move around on climbs, and respond to changes in terrain. What you want to eliminate is “unnecessary movement and tension”.
Produce power efficiently.
Breathe freely.
Control the bike.
Remain comfortable.
Maintain your position as fatigue develops.
Finish the ride without unnecessary soreness.
That's much more useful than trying to copy the position of a professional cyclist whose body, bike, and training demands may be completely different from yours.
